After the victory in 1998 of a coalition of parties led by Fidesz, Viktor Orban formed a center-right government. In the same year, Orban visited Washington as part of a working visit as prime minister. However, the further centralization of power in Hungary, the strengthening of the prime minister's role in the Hungarian political system, and the social orientation of politics with a strong right-wing bias scared the Bill Clinton administration away from further ties with Viktor Orban. American Democrats were much more impressed by the liberal governments of Peter Medgyessy and later Ferenc Gyurcsany.
However, in recent months, the Hungarian Prime Minister has revived contacts with US conservatives. Why does the Hungarian prime minister seek for their support and what does he have in common with American traditionalists?
