Revising Atmospheric Turn: Concepts and Main Approaches
The paper focuses on a concept of atmosphere since its growing popularity resulted in the notion of “atmospheric turn” (Griffero, 2019; Griffero, Tedeschini 2019; Latka 2019). The paper assumes that atmospheric turn was provoked by general trends in social theory mainly the search for holistic perspective in order to overcome the fragmentation of knowledge about affective, spatial, and corporeal phenomena. Atmospheric turn unites concepts and vocabularies that are dealing with complex ephemeral affective spatial phenomena. The paper demonstrates the relation of atmospheric turn to influential epistemological turns such as spatial, affective, corporeal. The revision of the main approaches to the atmosphere including ambiance, affective and phenomenological atmosphere is provided as well as the comparison of their core elements.
