This study examines the association between health status among elderly individuals living alone and pet ownership (cats, dogs). We employ data from the “Time Use Survey” conducted by the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) in 2019, which contains information on more than 10,000 elderly individuals living alone aged 60 or older in Russia, including data on household pet ownership. Using nonlinear models linking self-rated health, pet ownership, income, gender, age, educational level, and settlement size, we show that pet ownership is negatively associated with poor self-rated health. This association is particularly pronounced among men and residents of large cities. To quantify the relationship, we use the marginal effect of pet ownership and a monetary estimate of the equivalent value of a pet.
