'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Kudriavtseva E.
The content of the work is the system is a system for identifying four types of written speech structures. A set of 11 calculated parameters, statistical standards, and semantic characteristics allows for the identification of a text's structure as the result of a specific cognitive schema (scene, event, story, evaluation). The method has been verified on a representative sample (N=3,938) and is based on identifying a critical threshold value of the subordination coefficient. Transitions between types have also been mathematically verified: from the atomic fixation of an object (Type I), through event-based affectivity (Type II) and narrative linearity (Type III), to reflexive authorial projection (Type IV). The key identifier for the transition to the highest forms of authorial projection (Type IV) is overcoming the syntactic barrier of 0.24 in the subordination coefficient.

Algebraic Model of Reflexive Problematic Statements
V. A. Petrovsky, Scientific and Technical Information Processing 2022 Vol. 49 No. 6 P. 472 – 480
This paper focuses on reflexive problematic statements represented by modal judgments of validity (subjective truth) and their combinations. It is proposed to describe these statements at three levels: reflexive problematic statements per se, modal judgments that characterize the validity of sentences constituting complex statements, and matrix representations of modal judgments. Modal judgments, as part of ...

Fedorov A., Современная библиотека 2026 № 6 С. 16–20

The concept of the I that is present in the scholarly and mundane consciousness is inwardly paradoxical, as it contains the risk of regression to “bad infinity”. Thus, “I see an object” obviously creates in me the image of the object; by implication, “someone” inside me sees the image of the perceived object and, consequently, ...

Vague stimulating ideas, images and metaphors in scientific thinking: researchers' work with horizons of unclear knowledge
Poddiakov A., / Series Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026. No. 7437658.
Clarity of knowledge and reasoning is necessary in many cases. Yet vagueness in scientific thinking related to surprise, curiosity, "ability to engage with not-knowing" (de Freitas) and abductive reasoning is also a crucially important source of scientific creativity which supplements combinatorial logic when dealing with the already known. Starting from studies by C. S. Peirce ...
