Resource Race and Green Transition: Three Unexpected Conclusions from Foresight Centres Research on Climate and Poverty
Beneath the surface of green energy—which most people associate with solar panels, electric vehicles, and reduced CO2 emissions—lies a complex web of geopolitical interests, international inequality, and resource constraints. Researchers from the Laboratory for Science and Technology Studies (LST) at the HSE ISSEK Foresight Centre have published a series of articles in leading international journals on hidden and overt conflicts surrounding critically important metals and minerals, as well as related processes in the energy sector.

Immersion in Second Language Environment Influences Bilinguals Perception of Emotions
Researchers at the Cognitive Health and Intelligence Centre at the HSE Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have discovered how bilingual individuals process emotional words in their native (first) and non-native (second) languages. It was found that the link between word meaning and bodily sensations is weaker in a second language than in a first language. However, the more a person is immersed in a language environment, the smaller this difference becomes. The article has been published in Language, Cognition and Neuroscience.

Neural mechanisms of expert persuasion on willingness to pay for sugar
Ntoumanis I., Davydova A., Sheronova Y. et al., Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience 2023 Vol. 17 Article 1147140
Sugar consumption is associated with many negative health consequences. It is, therefore, important to understand what can effectively influence individuals to consume less sugar. We recently showed that a healthy eating call by a health expert can significantly decrease the willingness to pay (WTP) for sugar-containing food. Here, we investigate which aspects of neural responses ...

Modern radio-engineering complexes, computers, and navigation systems placed on moving objects (aircrafts, ships, cars, etc.) may be subjected to significant pulsed and vibration mechanical loads during exploitation, such as impacts, vibrations, linear overloads, and acoustic noise. They may distort the parameters of electric signals, introduce additional errors into instrument readings, and destroy elements of equipment. ...

Mathematical Modelling of the Stochastic Nonlinear Thermal Processes in Electronic Systems by the Method of Pseudoinverse Matrix
Madera A. G., Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences 2019 Vol. 14 No. 23 P. 8786–8796
Thermal processes in electronic systems are stochastic and nonlinear. The stochasticity of thermal processes in electronic systems can be caused by both external stochastic environmental factors and internal stochastic factors of the electronic systems. Methods existing in the literature allow modeling thermal processes caused only by external stochastic factors. At the same time, there are ...

Blood cell analysis is one of the standard clinical tests. Despite the widespread use of exogenous markers for blood cell quantification, label-free optical methods are still of high demand due to their possibility for in vivo application and signal specific to the biochemical state of the cell provided by native fluorophores. Here we report the results of ...

Filtration of the suspension in a porous medium is important when strengthening the soil and creating watertight partitions for the construction of tunnels and underground structures. A model of deep bed filtration with variable porosity and fractional flow, and a size-exclusion mechanism of particle retention are considered. A global asymptotic solution is constructed in the entire domain in ...
