HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

The Diffusion of Values among Democracies and Autocracies

Global Policy. 2016. Vol. 7. No. 4. P. 563–570.
Welzel C., Deutsch F.

Over the past couple of years, our knowledge about diffusion processes has increased greatly. So far, the focus has been on public policies, political institutions, and civil society repertories. Our paper breaks new ground by exploring value diffusion at the societal level. Using the World Values Survey data, we are interested in the diffusion of emancipative values in different regime types, building a bridge between research on the micro foundations and macro political expressions of democratization and political regimes. In particular, we wish to understand whether the psychological bedrock of a pro-democratic mass culture – emancipative values – is diffusing between countries and, if yes, to what extent this diffusion is limited to democracies or also makes inroads into autocratically governed societies.

Contemporary research increasingly highlights the need to expand the age boundaries of authenticity studies. The foundational bases of authentic thinking and the manifestation of authentic behavior are laid precisely in childhood. Schoolchildren accept and express their authenticity, among other factors, depending on the socio-cultural context. Within this framework, the value sphere gains particular significance, as ...

Classification Approach to Mapping Cultural Differences: An Illustration Using Survey Data from 60 Russian Regions
Nastina E., Sokolov B., / Series OSF "SocArXiv". 2025.
We argue that a classification-based approach to measuring cultural differences across countries or subnational regions is a promising complement, and sometimes an alternative, to the widely used dimensional method in cross-cultural research. The latter summarises cultural variation using continuous dimensions, for example, Hofstede’s famous individualism-collectivism dimension. However, this approach relies on strong parametric assumptions, which are ...

Cross-Nationally, Non-Probability Web Surveys Demonstrate Poorer DemographicCoverage and Yield More Liberal Estimates of Public Opinion than F2F Surveys
Korsunava V., Sokolov B., / Series OSF "SocArXiv". 2025.
Non-probability web surveys offer several advantages over face-to-face (F2F) interviews—they are cheaper, faster, more accessible, and reduce interviewer effects and desirability bias. As such, they are increasingly popular in both academic and commercial research. However, they often yield demographically biased samples, raising concerns about the accuracy of the resulting public opinion estimates. Most studies on ...

Documenting the presence of two mutually contradictory views on the nature of values within the value discourse of the contemporary Russia, the authors argue that this apparent discursive contradiction in fact conceals a question about the effectiveness of nation-building and state’s value policy. At the same time, the attempts to grasp the essence of the latter by ...

The  notion  of  “political  accommodation” applied  to the  theory  and  practice  of managing cultural diversity could enrich the Russian academic dictionary. Liberal democratic states invented specific mechanisms for political accommodation of cultural differences. Thanks to these mechanisms, the part of the population of a democratic state that is not ready to dissolve into the ethnocultural ...
