Each possessed a unique logic of creative thought, and each influenced our understanding of what modernism is.
In 1978, American architect Stanley Tigerman created a photomontage titled *Titanic*, depicting Crown Hall—an academic building at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago—sinking into Lake Michigan, thereby symbolizing the demise of Modernism. For Tigerman’s generation, this image held more tragedy than irony. These postmodernist rebels had learned their craft from the pioneers of Modernism; while they admired their mentors, they adamantly refused to continue adhering to their doctrines. Crown Hall was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, whose work came to epitomize the International Style. This book is dedicated to his career.
