Осмысляя новое. Рецензия на книгу: Самутина Н. (2025). «Эта музыка слишком прекрасна»: тексты о кино и не только. М.: Новое литературное обозрение
This article is a review of Natalia Samutina's collection of texts «This Music is Too Beautiful: texts on cinema and more» (Moscow: Novoye Literaturnoye Obozrenie, 2025), edited by the author's colleagues, Boris Stepanov and Irina Kaspe. Considering the volume as a «seismograph of time», the author reconstructs the intellectual context of Russian film theory in the 2000s and 2010s, in which Anglo-American cultural studies, popularized by a group of Moscow scholars, emerged as a methodological alternative to continental philosophy in post-Soviet film theory. In this context a cartography of Samutina's ideas is constructed: from discussions of «Europeanness» to the exploration of nostalgia as a collective affect, then to cult and science fiction cinema and viewer`s paracinematic receptive practices. The author emphasizes that the researcher's key contribution lay in her sensitivity to the transformations of cinema, her increased attention to the development of terminology, and her systematic introduction of new authors and concepts (in particular, Tom Gunning's concept of «cinema of attractions») into Russian film theory. The review concludes with a reflection on the institutional fate of Russian film studies centers and the communication between them through texts.
