The three masters featured in this series shaped the history of 20th-century architecture. Each possessed a distinctive logic of creative thought, and each influenced our understanding of what modernism is.

Alvar Aalto was a Finnish architect who stood at the forefront of modern architecture and defined the vocabulary of modernism alongside Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, and representatives of the Dutch *De Stijl* ("The Style") group and Soviet Constructivism. In Finland, his name is revered on a par with the founding figures of national culture; conversely, Aalto is the very first name associated with Finland. Yet, his style differs strikingly from the characteristic aesthetic of the International Style.
