The art of repressed artists is a forced and unofficial trend in Soviet art that reflects various aspects of the cultural and historical context of the USSR in the 1930s and 1980s. The works of repressed artists created during their imprisonment in the Gulag not only reflect the emotional state of individuals in a state of non-freedom, but also provide a unique and individualized account of the daily life in the camps. This book explores the biographies and artworks of artists who were affected by the repressive policies of the Soviet Union, including Eva Levina-Rosengolts, Georgy Wagner, Konstantin Rotov, Rudolf Vedeneev, and Boris Sveshnikov. It also examines the works of Pyotr Belov, an artist who was not repressed but witnessed the era and captured a "third-person" perspective in his paintings. This book is intended for a wide audience interested in the art of the Soviet period.
