The authors of this digest analyze differences in the composition of employees compared to the self-employed and individual entrepreneurs in Russia, and then in their employment patterns and satisfaction with work-life balance. They draw on data from the Household Economic Behavior survey, which covers the Russian population aged 18 and older and has been conducted at the National Research University Higher School of Economics since June 2023. In all cases, employment status is determined by the primary place of employment (as defined by self-determination); additional employment is not considered. The calculations use data from the fourth (spring 2024) and sixth (spring 2025) waves of the Household Economic Behavior survey; the sample for each wave consisted of 6,000 respondents.
