The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Correcting Mistakes
Lukyanov F., Russia in Global Affairs 2026 Vol. 24 No. 1 P. 5–6
A quarter-century ago, in January 2001, George W. Bush took the oath of office as President of the United States. “If our country does not lead the cause of freedom, it will not be led,” he proclaimed at his inauguration. “Civility is not a tactic or a sentiment. It is the determined choice of trust ...

From Euphoria to Neurosis
Lukyanov F., Russia in Global Affairs 2025 Vol. 23 No. 4 P. 5–12
There are some things that signify entire historical processes and eras. The Berlin Wall is perhaps the most glaring example. What could better symbolize the division of Europe and the world into two ideologically, militarily, and politically irreconcilable blocs? A massive, technologically advanced fortification, cutting through the soul of a leading city of the Old World. ...

The Past Comes Knocking
Lukyanov F., Russia in Global Affairs 2025 Vol. 23 No. 3 P. 5–8
In times of upheaval, it is always tempting to compare the present with the past: Will history repeat itself? The war of Israel and the U.S. against Iran brings to mind the most diverse historical episodes—from the catastrophic (the world wars) to the equally painful but localized (e.g., the destruction of Iraq’s statehood at the ...

Bush assumed the reins arguably at the height of America's international power. In the decade following the Cold War, a victory declared by the president-elect's father, no one had emerged in the world willing to challenge the dominance of the United States. But it was during the Bush administration that a "radical turning point" occurred. ...

The meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska in August 2025 was somewhat reminiscent of the first summits (the word then entered our lexicon) between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva and Reykjavik. The two sides began with a profound degree of mutual misunderstanding, yet felt compelled to continue the conversation. The ...

During periods of upheaval, there's always the temptation to compare the present with times past. How things were then, and will they be the same now? The Israeli-US war against Iran evokes a wide range of historical episodes – from catastrophic ones (the outbreak of world wars) to equally painful but local ones (for example, ...

Lukyanov F., Россия в глобальной политике 2025 Т. 23 № 3(133) С. 5–8
History loves rhymes. Or rather, it's we who love to rhyme, drawing historical parallels by the ear. The eightieth anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and World War II, which led to the creation of the UN and the post-war world order, is marked by a surge in military, political, and diplomatic activity. Classification Approach to Mapping Cultural Differences: An Illustration Using Survey Data from 60 Russian Regions
Nastina E., Sokolov B., / Series OSF "SocArXiv". 2025.
We argue that a classification-based approach to measuring cultural differences across countries or subnational regions is a promising complement, and sometimes an alternative, to the widely used dimensional method in cross-cultural research. The latter summarises cultural variation using continuous dimensions, for example, Hofstede’s famous individualism-collectivism dimension. However, this approach relies on strong parametric assumptions, which are ...

Cross-Nationally, Non-Probability Web Surveys Demonstrate Poorer DemographicCoverage and Yield More Liberal Estimates of Public Opinion than F2F Surveys
Korsunava V., Sokolov B., / Series OSF "SocArXiv". 2025.
Non-probability web surveys offer several advantages over face-to-face (F2F) interviews—they are cheaper, faster, more accessible, and reduce interviewer effects and desirability bias. As such, they are increasingly popular in both academic and commercial research. However, they often yield demographically biased samples, raising concerns about the accuracy of the resulting public opinion estimates. Most studies on ...

Extended Family Structures Exert a Causal Influence on Fertility

Research of the impact of kin alloparenting on reproduction mainly focuses on mother’s parents and parents-in-law. The impact on fertility of extended families and the alloparental help with childcare they can provide has received much less attention. Moreover, there is an important lacuna in the existing studies of this problem, as it is mostly approached ...

The  notion  of  “political  accommodation” applied  to the  theory  and  practice  of managing cultural diversity could enrich the Russian academic dictionary. Liberal democratic states invented specific mechanisms for political accommodation of cultural differences. Thanks to these mechanisms, the part of the population of a democratic state that is not ready to dissolve into the ethnocultural ...
