The significant status of European subjects for Russian discourse is historically determined: since the Petrine era, European institutions and mores have been reference for the educated strata of Russian society. Over time, foreign Europe has become a significant Other for the national identity and at the same time an axis of identification. Therefore, the break with the Russian Federation initiated by the political leadership of the European Union has become very painful for the national society. If the conflict with Russia initiated by the United States has primarily economic and political dimensions, then the traumatic perception of the conflict with Europe is determined primarily by its spiritual and cultural content for the Russian civil society and the expert community.
