Указ Мурсили II о статусе царя Каркемиша Пияссили (CTH 57)
The tablet VAT 7420 (KBo 1.28 / CTH 57) contains a text of an edict issued by the Hittite king Mursili II to define the status of Piaššili / Šarri-Kušuḫ, the ruler of Karkemiš. According to the edict, the future rulers of Karkemiš were assigned a third rank in the imperial hierarchy after the great king of Ḫatti and the crown prince. This interpretation of the content of the edict was achieved after a discovery of parallels in the Bronze tablet treaty of the 13th century B.C. between Tudḫaliya IV and Kurunta of Tarḫuntašša. A comparison with the Tarḫuntašša treaty allowed at establishing new readings of the key passage of KBo 1.28, namely lines 17–19 of the obverse. The correct reconstruction was proposed by F. Pecchioli Daddi in 1991. Also, recently a hypothesis was advanced according to which KBo 1.28 represented a scholarly exercise dating back, on paleographic grounds, to the second half of the 13th century B.C. Even if the extant tablet, KBo 1.28, is a late scholarly copy, it should go back to the original text of the 14th century B.C. and therefore can be trusted as a historical source. The article offers a Russian translation and a detailed commentary of KBo 1.28.
