This publication presents a discussion of the article by I.S. Sleptsova (Kyzlasova) and E.G. Chesnokova “Vernacular museum: to the definition of the concept”, in which the authors propose to introduce an additional term to describe various practices of grassroots museum-building in modern society. Based on the use of the term vernacular in various fields of humanities, the authors substantiate their approach, in which these museum formations are considered as grassroots initiatives aimed at representing individual interests, as well as one of the ways of self-actualization. Critical remarks about the position of the authors and their views on the topic are presented by R.N. Abramov, D.A. Baranov, I.A. Grinko, P.S. Kupriyanov, who analyze the phenomenon under discussion mainly in the context of museology.
