The article presents materials from a discussion of approaches to studying ego-documents and the practice of their use in Russian sociological research. The discussion included the theoretical and methodological origins of this research area, N.N. Kozlova's contribution to its development, and the specifics of the formation of a scientific research school in the study of Soviet and Russian society through the analysis of "human documents"; methodological approaches to the qualitative analysis and interpretation of "naive" text, their ethical limitations; approaches to the study of modern standardized personal documents, as well as new forms of diary entries (blogs, video blogging). The application of these approaches was considered using examples of empirical research in a broad historical perspective: the social mobility of Russian diplomats in the first half of the 20th century based on the analysis of biographical notes and memoirs; leisure practices of the Soviet period based on letters "to the authorities"; the potential, results, and prospects of CV analysis in studies of social mobility and blogs.
