There are many examples illustrating the wit of scientists, their penchant for jokes. One such example is the comic poem "The Song of the Refractor" by the Berlin student Benno Messow (1898), which imitates the famous poem "The Song of the Bell" by Friedrich Schiller. The text of this work, found in the archives of the Russian astronomer V.K. Tserasky, is evidence of both the penchant of scientists for humor, and the versatile scientific and friendly ties between scientists and engineers in Russia and Germany at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. The proposed article is devoted to the analysis of Messow's poem, some pages of the biography of its author and the alleged circumstances of Messow's transfer of his work to V.K. Tserasky.
