«Сейчас я занят диссертацией»: диссертация в жизни и в карьере филолога-классика Б.И. Ордынского (1823–1861)
The article focuses on the reconstruction of the role of the dissertation in the life and career of the classical philologist Boris Ordynskiy (1823-1861), a graduate of Moscow University and an adjunct of Kazan University. Critical publications in thick literary magazines (“Otechestvennye zapiski”, “Sovremennik”, “Moskvityanin”) and scientific works of Ordynskiy, as well as office and personal documents from the Russian State Historical Archive, the Central State Archive of Moscow, the State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Manuscript Department of the Russian State Library, the Manuscript Department of the Institute of Russian Literature (the Pushkin House) were used as historical sources. Not only the official and university discourses about the dissertation, but also registers and contexts in which statements about the dissertation were made on a personal level can be detected in these documents. Eventually, feelings and emotions associated with the process of writing, publishing and defending a dissertation were traced, practices and norms of critical statements about one’s own and someone else’s dissertation and the formation of the image of an ideal dissertation in classical philology were identified, and the role of the dissertation for building a career at the university was considered.
