Universities around the world are working to leave their "ivory tower" where they have long been in their comfort zone. Today's university occupies an ambiguous position in society: being rather insecure in its role, it is on a level between an entrepreneurial university and a medieval academy. Nowadays, in different parts of the world, we see an intention to build a more "socially oriented university" with an emphasis on a regional approach on the part of students. Thus, the "third mission" includes innovation, entrepreneurship and social responsibility. The importance of intellectual volunteering for society in general and for each individual in particular can hardly be overestimated, therefore its dissemination and promotion of volunteerism is given special attention. The Autonomous Nonprofit Organization "Agency for Social Investments and Innovations" together with the Moscow and St. Petersburg campuses of the National Research University Higher School of Economics is implementing a project among students of Russian higher education institutions on the development of intellectual volunteering of social orientation The pilot stage of the project started in July 2021: on the basis of the two campuses of the Higher School of Economics, models of applied project-based learning and service learning were developed and tested to improve the social competencies of Russian university students by solving the tasks of social entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations, as well as by helping them to solve the problems of social entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations, as well as by launching their own socially significant projects.
