Ancient Craniiform Brachiopod: A Newly Discovered Species with a Unique Shell Shape and Lifestyle
Scientists from HSE University, MSU, and Tallinn University of Technology have studied a fossil species of ancient brachiopods that lived in a warm sea in what is now northern Estonia more than 445 million years ago. These ancient brachiopods developed a cup-shaped shell with a protective 'cap' that shielded them from overgrowth by other marine organisms. The study has been published in Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology.

Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Exploring Networks of Lexical Variation in Russian Sign Language

Frontiers in Psychology. 2022. Vol. 12. Article 740734.
Kimmelman V., Komarova A., Luchkova L., Vinogradova V., Alekseeva O.

When describing variation at the lexical level in sign languages, researchers often distinguish between phonological and lexical variants, using the following principle: if two signs differ in only one of the major phonological components (handshape, orientation, movement, location), then they are considered phonological variants, otherwise they are considered separate lexemes. We demonstrate that this principle leads to contradictions in some simple and more complex cases of variation. We argue that it is useful to visualize the relations between variants as graphs, and we describe possible networks of variants that can arise using this visualization tool. We further demonstrate that these scenarios in fact arise in the case of variation in color terms and kinship terms in Russian Sign Language (RSL), using a newly created database of lexical variation in RSL. We show that it is possible to develop a set of formal rules that can help distinguish phonological and lexical variation also in the problematic scenarios. However, we argue that it might be a mistake to dismiss the actual complexity of variant relations in order to arrive at the binary lexical vs. phonological variant opposition.

Moskvina Z. О., Вестник Российского университета дружбы народов. Серия: Литературоведение, журналистика 2026 Т. 31 № 2 С. 398–408
Abstract. This article explores the semantic and cognitive mechanisms governing the functioning of the lexeme “irreversibility” (Unumkehrbarkeit) within contemporary German media discourse covering the crisis in German-Russian relations. The study tests the hypothesis that the use of irreversibility semantics in the mass media serves as a rhetorical strategy intended to reinforce the perception of ongoing ...

Men and women are from the same planet Gender similarities in perspective-taking abilities
Imbault C., Slioussar N., Ivanenko A. et al., The Mental Lexicon 2026 P. 1–23
The study examines emotional responses to words representing a wide range of psychological valence and focuses on gender-related differences. We aimed to find out whether men and women differ in their emotional responses, and whether they can take the perspective of another gender. We used the slider paradigm (Warriner et al., 2017): participants saw a humanoid ...

There is a scene in Pindar’s Pythian 9 that attracts much attention of scholars, not only because the erotic theme in general is unusual for Pindar, but also because in this scene neither the question that Apollo addresses Chiron, nor the answer that Chiron gives him, can be unambiguously interpreted. Does Apollo intend to commit open violence against Cyrene, or ...

First, it discusses the semantic parameters underlying lexical oppositions within each of the domains (e.g., type of the subject and referentiality of the object, for searching; intentionality and animacy of the object, for finding). Second, it ...

LANGUAGE POLICY IN MULTIETHNIC COUNTRIES
-, 2026.
The papers in this thematic volume demonstrate that language policy in the post-Soviet space and elsewhere reveals a fundamental tension that mirrors global shifts: the conflict between state efforts to manage national identity and the organic reality of human communication. While regional nationalization efforts often demonstrate global patterns of securitization, the actual practices of speakers tell a different story. Language policy ...

The first study considers question marking in regular wh-questions and in question-answer pairs. It shows that the two constructions have very different nonmanual markers. The second study analyzes marking of ...

Linearization constraints on sentential negation in Russian Sign Language are prosodic
Rudnev P., Anna Kuznetsova, Sign Language & Linguistics 2021 Vol. 24 No. 2 P. 259–273
This short remark documents exceptions to the main strategy of expressing sentential negation in Russian Sign Language (RSL). The postverbal sentential negation particle in RSL inverts the basic SVO order characteristic of the language turning it into SOV (Pasalskaya 2018a). We show that this reversal requirement under negation is not absolute and does not apply ...

Automatic Extraction of Handshapes Inventory in Russian Sign Language
Klezovich A., / NRU HSE. Series WP BRP "Linguistics". 2019. No. 86.
The Prosodic model of phonology (Brentari 1998) implies that all signs in any sign language have prosodic and inherent features. This dichotomy (movement feature vs. all other features) occurs to some extent in all phonological theories. The idea derives from Liddell & Johnson’s (1994) Movement-Hold model, where they proposed that movements can be in most ...
