At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Development of Sign Language Interpreters’ Professional Training in Russia

P. 310–326.
Komarova A., Davidenko T., Vinogradova V., Woll B.

As of 2024, Russia is the largest country in the world, nearly twice the size of Canada. Forty percent of the land is located in Europe, and the rest, to the east of the Urals, is in Asia. It occupies 11% of the world’s land but has a population of around 146 million people, which places Russia in ninth place among other countries in terms of population size. There are at least 120,000 people in Russia who communicate in Russian Sign Language (RSL). There are approximately 280 different languages with different statuses in the country, and RSL is officially recognized as a separate language that, according to the 2010 census, occupies 38th place among other languages. The Russian Empire (1721–1917) and then the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR; 1922–1991) existed in an even bigger territory, which took in other countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The focus of this chapter is primarily on Russia, but we do give a brief review in relation to the former States of the Soviet Union, and more information about the neighboring countries can be seen in Komorova (2022).

Exploring Networks of Lexical Variation in Russian Sign Language
Kimmelman V., Komarova A., Luchkova L. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2022 Vol. 12 Article 740734
When describing variation at the lexical level in sign languages, researchers often distinguish between phonological and lexical variants, using the following principle: if two signs differ in only one of the major phonological components (handshape, orientation, movement, location), then they are considered phonological variants, otherwise they are considered separate lexemes. We demonstrate that this principle ...

Ясин М. И., Vinogradova V., Психолог 2018 No. 4 P. 46–54

Serial position encoding of signs
Miozzo M., Petrova A., Fischer-Baum S. et al., Cognition 2016 Vol. 154 P. 69–80
Reduced short-term memory (STM) capacity has been reported for sign as compared to speech when items have to be recalled in a specific order. This difference has been attributed to a more precise and efficient serial position encoding in verbal STM (used for speech) than visuo-spatial STM (used for sign). We tested in the present investigation whether ...
