Effective intraoperative speech mapping requires specific test with standardized linguistic material. The last one should capture speech function supported by brain region targeted for resection. It is necessary to develop a test tailored to specific patient’s needs and document intraoperative linguistic support. The objective of this report was to describe the procedure of intraoperative speech testing and battery of intraoperative tests for Russian language. We correlated intraoperative tests with brain regions and speech functions, as well as presented an application for intraoperative linguistic testing.

The article newly presents archival materials from the Directorate of Imperial Theaters relative to the organization of a crocodile exhibition held in St. Petersburg Passage department store in the autumn of 1864, along with newspaper reports on the event. The close analysis of specific articles demonstrates that this exhibition served as the direct inspiration and ...

This article examines V. B. Shklovsky’s Sentimental Journey (1923) as a literary work created in accordance with the conventions of oral narrative. The formal features of the text of Sentimental Journey are used for reassessing the fundamental theoretical theses of Russian Formalism and, in particular, the models proposed by the Formalists for conceptualizing poetic language ...

Dezi A., Sesto San Giovanni: Mimesis, 2026.
This book is a metaphysical inquiry into the nature and origin of the manifold. Taking Schelling’s Erlangen lectures of 1820–1821 as its point of departure and hermeneutic horizon, it develops an interpretation of Nomos that transcends its political, juridical, and social determinations. Nomos thereby emerges as the ontological principle of an infinite, variegated multiplicity of ...

This article examines the manuscript tradition of Kallistos Angelikoudes’ Hesychastic consolation, a fluid and complex corpus of thirty Logoi preserved primarily in Vat. gr. 736. The authors survey all known witnesses—including the autograph Barb. gr. 420, the Lond. Arund. 520, and several later copies—and analyze their textual relationships, variant readings, and codicological features. They demonstrate ...

The paper describes the construction litso takoy-to natsionalnosti ‘a person of such-and-such an ethnicity’ in Russian with its semantic and pragmatic characteristics. The purpose of the study is to trace the appearance of the construction and analyse how it is used and how it is perceived. Three expressions representing this construction are considered in more ...

In recent years, the researchers working on Uralic languages within Minimalism seem to have built a consensus on how to define the
position of negation in any language with a negative verb. The main and usually the only argument is based on the work [Mitchell 2006].
The argument is as follows: if the negative verb expresses tense, ...

This paper presents experimental evidence for the over-specification (redundant use) of Thai postnominal
numerals in referential communication. The first experiment reveals high rates of over-specification
in oral responses that include Thai postnominal and Russian prenominal numerals tested in a contrastive
multi-number visual context. The second experiment demonstrates lower but still relatively high
rates of over-specification in written responses that ...

The paper reports on an experimental study that reveals a difference
between two types of under-informative utterances with the quantifier “nekotoryj”
(‘some’) in Russian. The experiment was conducted as an inference task based on [Geurts,
Pouscoulous 2009; Val Tiel et al. 2016] with some modifications. The experiment
showed that both types of utterances more often have inference-based interpretations
rather than ...

Background. There are some unresolved issues in surgery for gliomas of Broca’s area (optimal intraoperative testing, cortical mapping, and stimulation parameters).
Objective. To clarify the peculiarities of neurosurgical technique and speech testing in surgery for gliomas of Broca’s area.
Material and methods. A single-center cohort retrospective study was devoted to surgical treatment of patients with Broca’s area ...

Objective. The precise mapping of speech-related functions is crucial for successful neurosurgical interventions in epilepsy and brain tumor cases. Traditional methods like electrocortical stimulation mapping (ESM) are effective but carry a significant risk of inducing seizures. Methods. To address this, we have prepared a comprehensive ESM + electrocorticographic mapping (ECM) dataset from 14 patients with chronically implanted stereo-EEG electrodes. Then ...

Applying language mapping during awake surgery is an approach for identifying functionally crucial language and speech regions. Despite the widespread use of this approach in world practice, there are currently a limited number of batteries of intraoperative language tasks that would be aimed at testing various subfunctions of language. This literature review aims to describe ...

fMRI language mapping studies report right-hemispheric contribution to language in healthy individuals. However, it remains unclear whether these right-hemispheric patterns of activity are critical for language, which is highly relevant for clinical preoperative language mapping. The available findings are controversial. In this study, we first measured individual patterns of language lateralization with an fMRI language localizer ...

Preoperative language mapping with navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) is currently based on the disruption of performance during object naming. The resulting cortical language maps, however, lack accuracy when compared to intraoperative mapping. The question arises whether nTMS results can be improved, when another language task is considered, involving verb retrieval in sentence context. Twenty ...

Visualization of functionally significant subcortical white matter fibers is needed in neurosurgical procedures in order to avoid damage to the language network during resection. In an effort to achieve this, positive cortical points revealed during preoperative language mapping with navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) can be employed as regions of interest (ROIs) for diffusion tensor ...

Navigated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (nTMS) is used to understand the cortical organization of language in preparation for the surgical removal of a brain tumor. Action naming with finite verbs can be employed for that purpose, providing additional information to object naming. However, little research has focused on the properties of the verbs that are used ...

To minimize permanent postoperative deficits, functional mapping with direct electrical stimulation (DES) is becoming a gold standard when a brain tumor resection must be performed near or within eloquent areas. Due to the devastating impact of communication disabilities, language is one of the most commonly mapped functions. However, standardized linguistic protocols for intraoperative use are still scarce. Here we ...
