The history of the USSR is considered for the first time in a techno-political and socio-cultural perspective through the prism of the "energy of socialism". Based on the STS methodology, the social anthropology of technology and the cultural history of Russia, the interaction of major scientific and technical programs of the electrical, nuclear and oil profile with the Soviet project is described. As the authors show, the problem of energy and its carriers not only played a special role in the construction of socialism, but the very historical interval of the existence of the Soviet state - from the GOELRO plan, technological optimism and the dream of pure productivity to the oil needle, the transformation into a resource economy and technophobia - had technological marking and was asked by it.
