Scientists Develop Algorithm for Accurate Financial Time Series Forecasting
Researchers at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science benchmarked more than 200,000 model configurations for predicting financial asset prices and realised volatility, showing that performance can be improved by filtering out noise at specific frequencies in advance. This technique increased accuracy in 65% of cases. The authors also developed their own algorithm, which achieves accuracy comparable to that of the best models while requiring less computational power. The study has been published in Applied Soft Computing.

Fair Division: How Mathematics Helps to Divide the Indivisible
How can items be allocated among participants so that no one feels short-changed? Alexander Karpov, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, and his Singaporean colleague, Prof. Warut Suksompong, set out to find a mathematical answer to this question. In this interview, they discuss how a model of rational preferences is constructed, why one cannot rely on a simple sum of values, and where an algorithm that asks a minimal number of questions can be useful.

Electronics of the Future: Why Superconductors and Spintronics Work Together
It was once believed that superconductivity and magnetism avoided each other like the devil avoids holy water. However, modern nanostructures prove the opposite. A Russian theoretical physicist and Indian experimentalists have joined forces to create the electronics of the future—free from energy losses. Nataliya Pugach, Professor at the School of Electronic Engineering at HSE MIEM and Leading Research Fellow at the Quantum Nanoelectronics Laboratory, explains how a long-standing acquaintance in Cambridge grew into a mirror laboratory project with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), how superconducting spintronics works, and what surprises a researcher in India beyond the university campus.

Приоритеты студентов российских вузов: обучение, семья, работа

Вестник Российского университета дружбы народов. Серия: Социология. 2020. Т. 20. № 4. С. 919–928.
Nazarova I. B., Зеленская М. П.

Based on the materials of a survey conducted in 2018, there have been studied the students social ideas concerning development of life trajectories, including relations between young people, marriage, creating a family, the birth of children, responsibility for actions in the interpersonal space, interaction with parents, education and career building. There has been chosen the method of vignettes with the inclusion of five factors-values describing the behavior associated with determining the student life trajectory. Using the vignette methodology and applying logistic regression has allowed us to confirm the most significant values for students (independent variables) based on their approval of the actions of the vignette characters (a dependent variable).

During the undergraduate period, getting a higher education is a priority over starting a family, having a child, employment and parental support. The value of education is 2.3 times more important than the value of creating a family, and 3.1 times more important than having a child. When evaluating actions, the preference for education over family creation is greater for boys than for girls.

Marrying and creating a family during the student years are approved primarily for girls. The probability of the respondents' approval of a young man, marrying or starting a family, is at the level of 29%, while the approval of a girl at the same situation – is 96%. Birth is probably supported for both girls (30%) and boys (19%). Inclusion in employment is only welcome for female characters in vignettes (21%). The importance of parental support is noted only for young men.

Education is an absolute priority for all the respondents. However, for girls during their student years a more intense life trajectory is approved: getting a higher education, starting a family life, having a child, having a job or part-time work. In the traditional sense, family and children are an important component of life for women, but for a modern girl a modernist choice is also necessary – with a focus on a career and employment.
