The article is linked to a highly relevant problem of creative translation of literary texts. The aim of the article is to study the search for adequate translation equivalents. The research focuses on the translation “black box” problem, stresses the special role of context for translation, studies the method of creating associations and activating links between concepts while translating proper names, metaphors and occasionalisms. The literary translator's aim is to transfer images and concepts created by the author from the source language into the target language and to communicate the pragmatic potential of the text. The current research is based on the examples taken from “Blackberry Wine” by Joanne Harris and its translation into Russian by A. Kilanova. The applied method is immediate constituents analysis.
