In this article, the author talks about combined in the Russian cultural tradition practices of punishment and pardon. From the point of view of the author, and to punish and pardon power uses in the interests of political legitimacy. In this case, the act of power makes up for the deficit of legitimacy. The practice of punishment and pardon are considered by the author in the Aleksandr Pushkin's text about rebellion of Pugachev. For example, the historical figure of Emelyan Pugachev, having literary counterpart in Pushkin's text clearly noticeable as power carrier uses its available resources for the articulation of the political practices of punishment and pardon. High frequency of alternation of coercion and encouragement, from the point of view of the author, shows the special cultural tradition, and in a way characterized by rebellious person in Russian culture.
