The paper reviews the methods of mental maps’ analysis. Despite widespread use of mental maps as a method for studying the concepts of space, reflections on the question of theoretical and methodological implications of various analysis methods’ validity are poorly represented in the literature. The logic of the text contains the transition from trying to correlate physical reality and mental representations through error estimate for the idea of social space’s nature and its metric. As a result, network analysis of mental maps is preferred in accordance with the primary K. Lynch’s theoretical premise of structural image. However, mental maps are just one of many techniques to study spatial representations (and sometimes not the best in instrumental sense), so in the end we give alternative expedients. Finally, there is a list of alternatives linked with the implementation of mental mapping. The choice between them needs to be done according to research goals and basic axiomatic.
