Student extracurricular activity represents a multifaceted phenomenon that plays a significant role in the development of universal and professional competencies, academic success, and personal growth. Despite a wide range of empirical studies, the academic literature continues to demonstrate terminological inconsistency and conceptual ambiguity in defining this notion. This article offers a conceptual and analytical review of existing approaches to the definition and classification of student extracurricular activity. Four key perspectives are identified: the institutional approach, the non-institutional approach, the curriculum-related perspective, and the skill development approach. Each of them proves to be relevant depending on the research aims and methodology, highlighting different dimensions of the phenomenon. Particular attention is given to cross-national and cultural differences in the organization and perception of extracurricular engagement. The article emphasizes the importance of selecting an appropriate conceptual framework in accordance with the specific research goals, as well as the potential for combining multiple approaches to achieve a more comprehensive analysis.
