Objective of the study was to analyze the peculiarities of regional historical sports heritage protection and the attitudes of residents of the region to the preservation of the historical sports heritage. Methods and structure of the study. The study was based on an interdisciplinary approach, which enabled to examine the specified problem from the perspective of history, culturology, and pedagogy; the leading research method was a comparative one (comparative-historical), which made it possible to identify common and specific features of regional sports museums. We conducted a pilot testing of the peculiarities of preservation of the historical sports heritage in the provincial museums of 28 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. A total of 165 physical education teachers and 170 students (future teachers and athletes) were subject to a questionnaire survey to determine their attitudes towards the historical sports heritage, understanding of the necessity of its preservation in the regional museums and the possibility to create a sports museum in Ulyanovsk. Results and conclusions. The authors identified the types of sports museums located in the territory of our country: complex museum centers reflecting the history of sports in the territory, with substantial museum collections, implementing an interactive visitor technology in the exhibition space; museums on the history of sports of a particular region; sports hall of fame museums; museums dedicated to outstanding athletes and their achievements; museums of a particular sport. The study found that athletes and veterans of the sports movement actively participated in the establishment of all sports museums. It was also found that the National Sports Museum (Moscow) provided significant support for the creation of the regional sports museums. The educational research on the attitudes of physical education teachers and students to the historical sports heritage by the method of a questionnaire survey found that, while positive attitudes to the preservation of the historical sports heritage of their region were maintained, the respondents were well informed about it.
