HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

Роль уровня притязаний и социальных сравнений в детерминации удовлетворенности жизнью

Мониторинг общественного мнения: Экономические и социальные перемены. 2020. № 1. С. 206–224.
Nastina E., Almakaeva A.

This research aims to establish the effect of aspiration level and social comparison on life satisfaction in Russia. Unlike previous studies, it is argued that in their financial aspirations individuals orient  themselves  not  to  a  single  ideal  income figure but rather to an inherently socialcomparative  space  of  prosperity.  Depending on their life experience they will aim at either approaching the higher border or the center of this space, or at getting farther from the lower borderline. The results of multilevel regression modeling run on data from Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS), Wave 25 show that, in line with previous research, the higher up are one’s aspirations, the lower is their satisfaction with life. Interestingly though, the exact mechanisms are rather different for individuals who have lived through the economic crisis of the 90s fullaged and their younger compatriots. It was also found that social comparison with generalized other have a higher effect on one’s subjective wellbeing than with specific income groups (the rich, middle class or the poor). Moreover, the negative effect of the aspiration level is alleviated by higher poverty rate in the region: the individuals experience lower reduction in life satisfaction if they are more financially deprived people around them.

Ustyuzhanin V., Zinkina J. V., Korotayev A., / Series "SocArXiv". 2026.
“Leaderlessness” is widely held to be a defining feature of contemporary mass mobilization, yet the claim rests on a handful of recent cases. We offer the first systematic cross-national analysis of this phenomenon from 1791 to 2019. We show that the absence of leadership is real but older and more modest than claimed: the share ...

Is Parenthood Contributing to Emotional Wellbeing? The Neutrality Paradox and a Possible Resolution
Apostolou M., Sullman M., Błachnio A. et al., Evolutionary Psychology 2026 Vol. 24 No. 1
Evolutionary theorizing predicts that parenthood is associated with higher hedonic wellbeing (experiencing more positive and fewer negative emotions), higher eudaimonic wellbeing (experiencing greater meaning in life), and greater life satisfaction. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed a dataset comprising 5,556 participants drawn from 10 different nations. We found a small positive effect of parenthood on ...

Classification Approach to Mapping Cultural Differences: An Illustration Using Survey Data from 60 Russian Regions
Nastina E., Sokolov B., / Series OSF "SocArXiv". 2025.
We argue that a classification-based approach to measuring cultural differences across countries or subnational regions is a promising complement, and sometimes an alternative, to the widely used dimensional method in cross-cultural research. The latter summarises cultural variation using continuous dimensions, for example, Hofstede’s famous individualism-collectivism dimension. However, this approach relies on strong parametric assumptions, which are ...

Cross-Nationally, Non-Probability Web Surveys Demonstrate Poorer DemographicCoverage and Yield More Liberal Estimates of Public Opinion than F2F Surveys
Korsunava V., Sokolov B., / Series OSF "SocArXiv". 2025.
Non-probability web surveys offer several advantages over face-to-face (F2F) interviews—they are cheaper, faster, more accessible, and reduce interviewer effects and desirability bias. As such, they are increasingly popular in both academic and commercial research. However, they often yield demographically biased samples, raising concerns about the accuracy of the resulting public opinion estimates. Most studies on ...
