The paper analyses the techniques to transfer artistic expressiveness, figurativeness and sociocultural peculiarities of the Chinese phraseological units by the material of the Russian translation of Mo Yan's novel “Life and Death Are Wearing Me out” performed by I. A. Egorov. It is shown that the translator basically uses word-for-word translation when rendering phraseological units. The conclusion is made that word-for-word translation can serve as a means to preserve national and cultural specificity of the source text.
