L’unità narrativa nell’Orlando Furioso
The article investigates not separate themes and plot lines in Ariosto’s poem but its whole narrative complex. In this analysis the accent is placed equally on the linear development of the plot (syntagmatics) and on the links between separate narrative strands (paradigmatics). At the level of syntagmatics the main law of plot construction in Orlando Furioso is based on the principle of dichotomy: most of major narrative strands manifest a tendency to division into two parts, marked at the borderline by a shift in intonation and/or genre. At the level of paradigmatics the plot strands are related in pairs, following either the principle of binary opposition, or the principle of complementary distribution. The plot mechanism of Orlando Furioso can be described with the help of a semiotic square.
