Beyond the Binary: A Theoretical Exploration of Gendered Experiences for Women in Nigerian STEM Education
This theoretical article examines the persistent problem of "talent drain" for women in Nigerian higher education, where increasing female representation in male-dominated STEM fields is undermined by persistent stereotypes and sociocultural barriers. Using critical theoretical analysis and interpretive synthesis, the article seeks to demonstrate how the concept of reflexive modernization explains why stereotype threat prompts the reconceptualization of gender roles suggested by role congruity theory. The article argues that while gender expectations fundamentally undermine women's sense of belonging in STEM, digital media and NGOs are crucial agents of change, playing a significant role in shifting the debate from a traditional model that emphasizes women's disadvantages to the need for reform of the education system as a whole. By fostering a pan-African dialogue on gender equality in higher education, they have facilitated the dissemination of best practices across the continent.
