The USSR’s “Atheist-in-Chief” and the Public Space in the Soviet 1960s
Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History. 2024. Vol. 25. No. 4. P. 757–781.
Egorova G.
In this article, the author proposes to consider the archive of private correspondence of a former seminary teacher, a well-known theologian, as a source for studying non-traditional forms of public space in late Soviet society. The abdication of Alexander Osipov took place during the era of Khrushchev's anti-religious campaign and caused a great public outcry. In the context of religious persecution, Soviet people could not openly discuss the specifics of the atheist campaign in general and the phenomenon of apostasy in particular. Despite personal hostility, correspondence with Osipov became a channel for hundreds of people to discuss taboo issues, and deserves to be studied as an independent phenomenon.

Agnosticism and atheism are often grouped simply as nonreligious identities, yet emerging research highlights their distinct psychological profiles and social implications. We examined whether agnostics and atheists exhibit collective ...
