Мир провинции в рассказе Леонида Андреева "Буяниха"

The article presents an interpretation of Leonid Andreev’s novel “Buyanikha”, unpublished during the writer’s lifetime. The novel is considered as an example of the “Oryol text”, with features of the writer’s biography, on the one hand, and with representatives of the provincial text, on the other. The novel is based on a number of antinomies: the real world — the ideal, fictional world; the world of a child — the world of an adult.

In the image of Pushkarnaya Street, the key features of the Russian province at the turn of the century, its customs are guessed: visiting taverns, mint gingerbread, laughter. The mocking laughter performs a socially regulating functionin the novel.

The provincial world appears stereoscopic depending on the hero’s point of view: the world of Buyanikha is cruel, full of mockery — in Kolya’s world there is a place for adventures, miracles, a smile as an expression of the world’s goodwill. The provincial world is presented as a closed, almost folklore space with its own way of life, ideas about beauty, prohibitions.
