The article explores causes, consequences, and solutions to the problem of ambiguity of the concept of topos, a key concept in the discourse-historical approach (DHA) to critical discourse analysis. It analyses how this concept is used by authors adhering to the DHA, and compares this with its meaning and practical application in classical and new rhetoric. Finally, the article outlines conditions when the application of the concept of topos would favour a more systematised interchange between many different disciplines employing it.
