Who is the "Stranger" in modern society? Where does he come from, how do we recognize him, what is he doing among us and what might "us" be associated with him? All these questions are already fundamental to social science, but each time, in new historical circumstances, they confront researchers in new ways and require new answers.

In short, the "stranger" is a carrier and embodiment of uncertainty in the social order, an "incentive" of its variability, a "challenge" to its orderliness and stability, evidence of its mobility. This also determines its basic social qualities - freedom, objectivity, abstractness and danger. This is why the "Stranger" is in a special relationship with the boundaries that order and define society. What is the subtle mechanism of this relationship, how is it formed at the most basic, ontological level, how does this mechanism work on the concrete empirical surface of social phenomena, and what are the contemporary forms of relations with the "Stranger"? How do space, time and movement (especially the movement of boundaries) "mesh" in this mechanism? The analysis of the modern 'outsider' is presented in this book, starting from a philosophical (socio-ontological, most abstract) basis - the Other - and bringing it to concrete varieties of the Marginal with its specific relation to borders. The process of "estrangement" itself is presented as a universal characteristic of contemporary social reality under the conditions of "globalization/localization/re-globalization", capturing almost all spheres of social relations and finally turning each of us into a "Stranger" to ourselves.
