Reading and understanding texts is one of the key competences required for effective interaction in the modern world. In the context of higher education, working with academic texts plays a particularly important role, as it has a direct impact on academic performance, students' participation in discussions and the quality of research papers. The importance of reading for academic performance is widely represented in the foreign agenda, but domestic research of this kind is clearly insufficient. Moreover, there is no clear definition of the concept of "academic reading" in both foreign and Russian literature, and its essential characteristics have not been identified. The main purpose of the article is to consider the concept of "academic reading" and related concepts in order to establish the connection between them. The article presents a review of foreign and domestic studies that allow us to determine the place and role of academic reading in the system of reading skills. The conducted literature review contributes to the consideration of the issue of the formation of academic reading in higher education, as it provides an opportunity to characterise this concept in comparison with other types of reading and to suggest its structure. This, in turn, makes it possible to clarify the educational outcomes in the field of academic reading.
