Ethical and technical issues in data-oriented media measurement: a Russian case
The growing penetration of various gadgets into our everyday life and its increasing digitalization has resulted in the fact that everything we do can be, in one way or another, registered and saved as logs of the devices we interact with. The use of these data allowed improvement in the accuracy of television audience measurements obtained by traditional methods. This leads to some issues for the methods of audience measurement – not only technical, but also ethical. One important issue is that the border between media consumption analysis and privacy violation is very thin. This leads to the main technical problem: the researchers need to restore the socio-demographic profile of viewers using only their media activity, because they did not give a permission to use their real profiles.
