Shams ad-Din Muhammad Hafiz (d. 1389) counts as one of the greatest lyricists in world literature. His ghazals are well known to the Russian reader in numerous poetic translations. This edition is the first philological translation of Hafiz’s oeuvre into Russian. The introductory article discusses the ghazal poetics of Hafiz in the context of the general development of this genre. The translation of each ghazal is preceded by the original text and accompanied by an extended commentary justifying the proposed interpretation (on social and customary realities, intertexts, lexical and grammatical analysis of difficult passages). The publication is completed with Indexes of proper names and Qur’anic quotations and allusions. This book is Part 1 of a two-part edition Ghazals of Hafiz. Texts, translations and commentaries, it goes up to first 100 ghazals; the second part presents ghazals 101–200.
The edition is intended primarily for specialists in Persianate literatures and for students enrolled in the university Persian Studies programs. It may also be of interest to medievalists studying other literary traditions, as well as to poets-translators and all lovers of Iranian culture.
