Ghazals of Hafiz. Texts, translations, commentaries is a long-term project aimed to prepare a complete translation into Russian of the Divan of Ghazals by Shams ad-Din Muhammad Hafiz (1315–1389), a great Persian lyricist who entered the pantheon of world literature.
This book is Part 2 of the project’s publications; Part 1 is based on the 2012 Moscow edition Hafiz. Ghazals in philological translation. Part 1 (Orientalia et Classica series,
Issue XLII). It is reproduced in this edition with corrections and some additions and includes commented translations of poems 1–100.
The book includes the following one hundred ghazals (101–200). It opens with an introductory article; one of the specific features of Hafiz’s poetics, the technique of creating an allegorical image through the reconfiguration of a traditional plot is there under discussion, with the King Jamshid and Prophet Yusuf imagery as case material. Hafez, like other poets of his circle, used Iranian myths and legends, Qur’anic stories, and literary plots to create a special language of circumlocution and implication. Allusions to the stories of Jamshid and Yusuf are most frequently used in Hafiz's poetry for allegorical expression of lyrical experiences, mystical insights, and political hints. The main body of the book provides the Persian texts of the poems, accompanied by philological translations, as well as detailed comments to each verse, designed to create the necessary hermeneutic context. Comments include information about cultural and everyday realities, conventional poetic motives, intertextual connections of verses, and lexical and grammatical analysis of complex passages. The publication is accompanied by an Index of proper names, an Index of Quranic citations and allusions, and a Bibliography.
