The article is devoted to Yu. V. Trifonov's story "The pigeon"s death" - one of the writer's first approaches to the cycle of "Moscow stories". The work carries out a historical reconstruction, which makes it possible to date the time of the story and correlate it with the creative path of the writer. The story is considered in dialogue with world culture (antique and Old Testament motifs) and Russian literature - the poetry of V. A. Zhukovsky, B. L. Pasternak, B. A. Slutsky and the prose of N. V. Gogol, I. S. Turgenev, I. E. Babel.
