Callimachus, Iambus I, 29-30: the bald man and his cloak

Lines 29-30 of Callimachus’ Iambus 1 have never caused troubles for scholars or commentators – only C.Trypanis annotated his own translation: “This passage is still obscure.” Indeed, the joke on the bald-headed man seems blurry and toothless at the same time and thus does not fit into the imagery of Ia. I, where all the other jokes on Alexandrian intellectuals are full of bile and mockery. My guess is that this joke is as good and as mordant as any of the others – it is only that it has a subtext that Alexandrian scholars could easily read, but which modern scholars have not considered. That subtext is the story of the death of Diogenes of Sinope.
