Approaching motif analysis of the Pyramid texts
in the framework of semiotics
This essay deals with approaches to the Pyramid texts in the perspective of semiotics and in connection with the term ‘motif’ related issues of the text description and analysis. In recent works of H. Hays and A. Morales concerning the Pyramid texts the term ‘motif’ did not accure special attention and vaguely viewed as formulaic and repeated textual segment. Its’ sphere of application is constricted to empirically observable level of text, reducing it to the level of expression and not meaning in terms of semiotics. Regarding motif as a sign of secondary semiotic nature in line with Russian tradition of historical poetics and folklore studies allows reaching a deeper level of interpretation and describing processes of textualization in connection with Egyptian worldview.
