HSE Economists Use Search Queries to Forecast Birth Rates
Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences have shown that the accuracy of birth rate forecasts for Russia can be improved by almost 50% by incorporating the dynamics of online search queries related to pregnancy and childbirth into forecasting models. In the best-performing models, the forecasting error fell from 4.6% to 3.2%. The findings have been published in Populations and Economics.

HSE Researchers Discover Who Eats Out in Russia-And Why
Around one-third of Russians (31.3%) rarely eat out or buy ready-made meals. The core group of active consumers—those who eat out or purchase prepared food almost every day or several times a week—accounts for only about 9% of the population. These are the findings of a study conducted by the HSE Institute for Social Policy. According to the researchers eating out is no longer a marker of high social status in Russia.

Neuro-oscillatory models of cortical speech processing
Dogonasheva O., Giraud A., Zakharov D. et al., Neural Networks 2025 Vol. 195 Article 108194
In this review, we examine computational models that explore the role of neural oscillations in speech perception, spanning from early auditory processing to higher cognitive stages. We focus on models that use rhythmic brain activities, such as gamma, theta, and delta oscillations, to encode phonemes, segment speech into syllables and words, and integrate linguistic elements ...

Fairness-Aware Maximal Cliques Identification in Attributed Social Networks With Concept-Cognitive Learning
Tao M., Hao F., Wei L. et al., IEEE Transactions on Computational Social Systems 2024 Vol. 11 No. 6 P. 7373–7385
Attributed social networks are pervasive in real life and play a crucial role in shaping various aspects of society. These networks not only capture the connections between individuals but also encompass the associated attributes and characteristics. Analyzing and understanding these attributes provide insights into social behaviors, information diffusion patterns, and the formation of influential communities. ...

Surrogate uncertainty estimation for your time series forecasting black-box: learn when to trust
Erlygin L., Zholobov V., Baklanova V. et al., , in: 2023 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining Workshops (ICDMW) 1–4 December 2023, Shanghai, China.: Shanghai: IEEE Computer Society, 2023. P. 1247–1258.
Machine learning models play a vital role in time series forecasting. These models, however, often overlook an important element: point uncertainty estimates. Incorporating these estimates is crucial for effective risk management, informed model selection, and decision-making.To address this issue, our research introduces a method for uncertainty estimation. We employ a surrogate Gaussian process regression model. ...

Поиск паттернов в динамике протестных кампаний: вычислительное моделирование и эмпирический анализ
Жеглов С. А., Социология: методология, методы, математическое моделирование 2022 № 54-55 С. 129–187
In most of current papers devoted to the analysis of protest-repression nexus, the research design misses the dynamic nature of this nexus, which seems methodologically incorrect. The analysis of the dynamics allows us to identify the role of various factors influencing the course of this conflict. The variety of different dynamics of the number of protesters and the ...

Modelling autonomous perpendicular parking procedure for car-like robot Avrora Unior in Gazebo simulator
Imameev D., Zakiev A., Magid E. et al., , in: Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Information, Control, and Communication Technologies, ICCT 2022.: IEEE, 2022. Ch. 410818 P. 1–4.
This paper describes an implementation of autonomous perpendicular parking and parking spot search algorithms. A procedure of the perpendicular parking is based on geometric constraints of a parking spot and a vehicle. The procedure of perpendicular parking includes driving until a first free parking spot is found, setting a vehicle into an initial pose, performing ...

The Three-Stage Hierarchical Logistic Model Controlling Personalized Playback of Audio Information for Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Varnavsky A., IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies 2024 Vol. 17 P. 2005–2019
The most critical parameter of audio and video information output is the playback speed, which affects many viewing or listening metrics, including when learning using tutoring systems. However, the availability of quantitative models for personalized playback speed control considering the learner's personal traits is still an open question. The work aims to develop a model ...

Misclassification Bias in Computational Social Science: A Simulation Approach for Assessing the Impact of Classification Errors on Social Indicators Research
Smetanin S., Komarov M. M., IEEE Access 2022 Vol. 10 P. 18886–18898
A growing body of literature has examined the potential of machine learning algorithms in constructing social indicators based on the automatic classification of digital traces. However, as long as the classification algorithms’ predictions are not completely error-free, the estimate of the relative occurrence of a particular class may be affected by misclassification bias, thereby affecting ...

Mapping computational thinking mindsets between educational levels with cognitive network science
Stella M., Kapuza A., Cramer C. et al., Journal of Complex Networks 2021 Vol. 9 No. 6 Article cnab020
A significant aspect of computational thinking is as a way of reasoning about the world in terms of data. This mindset channels number-crunching toward an ambition to discover knowledge through logic, models and simulations. Here we show how computational cognitive science can be used to reconstruct and analyse the structure of computational thinking mindsets (forma ...

Konstantin O. Petrosyants, Nikita I. Ryabov, , in: 2020 26th International Workshop on Thermal Investigations of ICs and Systems (THERMINIC).: IEEE, 2020. P. 1–7.
Multi-chip embedded PCBs were in resent years the mainstream technology of electronic packaging size reduction and at the same time providing improved performance. Ultra-small package size obviously strongly impacts the SiP module thermal behaviour. Unfortunately the complete thermal design methodology was not developed for this technology till now. In this work the problem of thermal ...
