The study of the scientific language and the structural elements of the dissertations is an important aspect in the study of dissertational culture. At the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, unwritten rules were formed for writing the introductory section of dissertations. The authors attempted to identify the process of formulating academic conventions. The article provides a comparative analysis of the prefaces to the dissertations on Russian history written by scholars from Moscow and St. Petersburg. The authors make conclusions about specifics of the introductory section of the dissertation in the context of scientific schools, and the presentation features of the individual components of the introduction.
