Гендер как дискриминирующий признак профессиональной успешности российских фрилансеров-разработчиков
Despite the presence of gender studies on discrimination at online job exchange platforms, in IT-sector, the comprehensive analysis of women’s oppression in IT on Russian freelance e-markets has not been conducted. The work is an attempt to fill the gap using Kohn's sociological approach to studying preconceptions, when it is not a prejudice bearer who has been analyzed, but environment in which preconceptions might exist – a freelance marketplace in the case of this study. Based on the data of one of the online freelance job exchange platforms, which was extracted by web-scraping, the study proves the occurrence of gender discrimination among IT specialists on Russian online labor marketplaces. Despite the dynamic development of IT and practices of remote work, women developers, as compared with men, receive lower remuneration, worse grades and lower ratings for similar projects. Low rating, remuneration, fewer projects and reviews pessimize the position of women in the organic search engine results page of the portal. The discriminatory behavior of clients worsens the position of women on the platform and reduces the chances of finding the next project – by focusing on the top of the SERP, the customer is less likely to see a woman as a contractor. To solve the problem, women buy points to promote their profiles, replace their names with the names of their husbands / partners by forming a fictitious gender, while completing the order, they often spend time on client’s training which was not specified in task requirements, overfulfill the plan to their detriment, lower prices.
