HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

2019. № 12. С. 70–80.
Pokrovsky N.

Abstract. The article deals with a phenomenological reconstruction of the «lifeworld» of urbanites who buy houses in the countryside for recreation and begin to create a different, non-urban models of existence, the center of which becomes a rural log house. The empirical frame is made up of the socalled «distant dachas». These are houses bought by urbanites in the villages in the peripheral rural areas located more than 400–600 km from the capitals – Moscow or St. Petersburg. This process is accompanied by the formation of a special «lifeworld» (in terms of phenomenology) among the townspeople with its mental structures such as «home», «hearth», «possession», «historical past», «world of belongings of previous owners», «abandonment in space», «solitude», «significant other», «archaica», et al. In the Near North of Russia, in the villages of the Kostroma Oblast, among the urbanites – summer residents and downshifters, one can observe a special approach to organizing everyday life, based on the individualization of living space with the priority of intangible values that fit into the context of preserving the socio-cultural space of a Russian village.

Concerns are growing about these scores’ validity, but subsequent research has not produced a widely accepted alternative. Here, we offer a refined theoretical conceptualization of I-C, we systematically reevaluate the validity of Hofstede’s I-C scores, and we report the ...

Minkov M., Akaliyski P., Kaasa A. et al., Journal of International Business Studies 2025 Vol. 56 No. 9 P. 1197–1206
Numerous studies focus on the tightness–looseness (TL) dimension of national culture, reporting important implications for business and management. However, the main TL measure has generated a number of theoretical and empirical concerns. It likely reflects unfounded national auto-stereotypes, the conceptual boundary between TL and individualism–collectivism (IC) is blurred, respondents in different societies have different TL-related ...

Is societal progress muting the expressivity of negative emotions? Evidence from two cross-national studies
Yeung J. C., Lun V. M., Li L. M. et al., Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology 2026 P. 1–30
Contemporary theories of emotion emphasize the dual role of emotions as both personal experiences and communicative signals during social interactions. However, the impact of macro-level societal structures on emotional expression remains underexplored. This study investigates the expression-experience discrepancy for self-reported emotions across nations, focusing on how societal development relates to this discrepancy, which captures expressivity. Using meta-analysis and multilevel modeling ...
