«Царствующий град Московский» как «место памяти» в России XVI–XVII вв.

This paper explores a popular modern-day festival – “The Moscow Day” (Den’ goroda Moskvy) – in historical perspective. The festival is conceived as a celebration of Moscow's anniversary, based on its first mentioning in written sources (1147). The festival was first proposed by the Muscovite Slavophiles in 1846-1847, and since then it has been treated and presented in a strong nationalistic discourse. However, the paper shows that an interest in the early history of Moscow, and especially in its foundation, appeared as early as the mid-sixteenth century. The author argues that around the middle of the seventeenth century the city of Moscow emerged as a Russian national “memory site” in the sense of the term as used by Pierre Nora.
