Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Zhdanov A., Korotayev A., Социология власти 2026 Т. 38 № 2 С. 118–167
Imagining a cosmic future touches on many topics — but typically avoids the topic of death, burial, and attitudes toward deceased ancestors. Most of these developments concern life-support systems. This article analyzes the debate between American anthropologist Elizabeth Povinelli and Russian cosmists. The subject of this debate is immortality and attitudes toward ancestors in the ...

Т., Zhdanov A., М.: НИЦ Инфра-М, 2023.
The mobility of political changes and the multiplicity of determinants that determine their course make them a rather difficult object to study. Moreover, the process of uncontrolled changes (political revolutions) is unpredictable when a society moves from one type of development and political system to another. This happened in the 90s of the XX century ...

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the number of empirical studies devoted to the analysis of factors influencing the risks of terrorist activity has increased significantly. At the same time, estimates of the impact of individual factors may differ in different studies, which is why there is a need for a generalizing work in ...

The Relationship between Political Procedural Justice and Attitudes toward the Political System: A Meta-analysis
Gulevich O., Borovikova J., Rodionova M., Political Psychology 2024 Vol. 45 No. 3 P. 537–557
A positive relationship between assessments of procedural justice and attitudes toward the political system has been identified in many studies of various countries. To quantify this relationship, a meta-analysis was conducted on 69 samples from 50,814 respondents, reported in 37 manuscripts between 1981 and 2021. We found positive correlations between assessments of procedural justice and ...

Internet, Political Regime and Terrorism: A Quantitative Analysis
Nikita Khokhlov, Korotayev A., Cross-Cultural Research 2022 Vol. 56 No. 4 P. 385–418
The Internet provides a medium for the rapid mobilization of dissatisfied citizens and potentially contributes to various forms of political instability, including terrorism. However, the spread of the Internet may not lead to a higher intensity of terrorist attacks because direct perpetrators rely on close personal offline ties, and the national security agencies derive symmetrical ...

The paper summarises the findings of this special issue and suggests avenues for future research. Terrorism and Democracy
Korotayev A., Vaskin I., Daniil Romanov, Comparative Sociology 2021 Vol. 20 No. 3 P. 344–379
This article proposes a new explanation of the positive correlation between democracy and terrorism detected in many previous studies. It is shown that this might be accounted for by the fact that factional democracies are subjected to more terrorist attacks than the other political regimes. A positive relationship between the democratic regime and the level ...

Neo-patrimonial practices and sustainability of authoritarian regimes in Eurasia
Shkel S., Communist and Post-Communist Studies 2019 Vol. 52 No. 2 P. 169–176
The article analyzes authoritarian regimes within the post-Soviet territory in terms of informal practices (clannishness, clientelism and patronage) and their characteristics used by political leaders to form a power coalition. It has been argued that any of these informal practices determine a power coalition of a certain size, which is consequential for regime sustainability. Power coalitions formed on the ...

Executive Constraints and Economic Growth in Autocracies
2018 Vol. 12 No. 4 P. 106–121
Authoritarian regimes differ by the degree to which the leader is constrained in his ability to influence the decision-making process. It has been argued that unlimited executive can either lead to adverse economic policy outcomes or improve economic performance. In this work, I reassess the effect of executive constraints on economic performance. While most of ...

Ivanov Y., Issaev L., Shishkina A.,

Regime Type and Political Destabilization in Cross-National Perspective: A Re-Analysis
Korotayev A., Bilyuga S., Slinko E. et al., Cross-Cultural Research 2017 Vol. 51 No. 1 P. 26–50
In this article, we re-analyze the hypothesis that the relationship between the type of political regime and its political instability forms an inverted U shape. Following this logic, consistent democracies and autocracies are more stable regimes, whereas intermediate regimes (anocracies) display the lowest levels of political stability. We re-test this hypothesis using a data set ...

Korotayev A., Полития: Анализ.
The article attempts to test the hypothesis that consolidated democracies and consecutive autocracies are more stable than intermediate regimes. The research conducted by the authors, with the help of data from CNTS and Freedom House, in general confirmed the presence of the U-curve relationship between the type of regime and the level of socio-political instability. At the same time, ...
